Types of Roofing

Choosing the right type of roofing for your home or business is an important decision.  Here are some descriptions and photos of several different types of roofing to help you make an informed decision.

Asphalt Shingle: Most common type of roofing material on sloped roofs in the United States.  Asphalt shingles are backed with either fiberglass or organic material, they come in a wide variety of colors, grades, and styles.

Hot Mop: This type of roofing uses hot tar.  It is less in use today and has generally been replaced by "Torchdown" or Modified Bitumen roll roofing.

Modified Bitumen: Aka "Torchdown" - This is a roll roofing product which combines asphalt and rubber with a fiberglass base.  It is applied using a heat or factory applied seal adhesive.  Modified Bitumen replaces the older "hot mop" style of tar roofing.  Torchdown is long lasting, heat resistant and used on low slope or flat roofs.  While very flexible and great for roofs with high traffic it is not recommended for areas with heavy snowfall.

Shake Shingle (Wood Shingle): Shake or wooden shingles are made from a variety of different woods including cedar, redwood, pine and others.  The difference between "shake" and "wood shingle" is that wood shingles are made by machines while shake is hand made.  While considered to have a natural look and popular in certain areas in the western and midwestern US shake and wood shingles are often limited by local building codes because they frequently lack any fire reisistance.

Tile: Tile roofing can be either concrete or clay and can be found in a wide variety of colors or finishes including a flat style.  While very attractive tile can be an expensive option and is very heavy.  If changing from a flat or shingle roof be sure that your structure can support the weight of a tile roof.

Metal Roofing: Metal roofing materials come in both a panel form and as shingles and can be used on flat, low slope, or steep slope roofs.  Metal roofs are relatively lightweight, often very attractive, have greater resistance to adverse weather conditions, and have excellent longevity.
